A combination of high dark clouds, a setting sun that was like a low hanging ball of fire, and a pair of rainbows arcing through it all sent Hamiltonians scrambling for their cameras Thursday evening.

As a result local social media was ablaze with images and exclamations (we gather some of the best below – if you want to share your shots with the city, tweet them out using the hashtag #hamont and we’ll get them into our Storify slideshow.

Today’s display comes at the end of an unseasonable warm (and wet) afternoon, a trend that looks as though it will carry through to Friday with an expected high of 17C. And while there is a good chance of light rain tomorrow evening, we should be blessed with sunshine in the morning turning to cloudy periods in the afternoon.

No word yet on the likeliehood of rainbows.
